About Kim
My Path
I have been in practice since 1995, providing counselling, psychotherapy and consultation. I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) and a Registered Marriage and Family Therapist (RMFT). I have a Masters (M.A.) of Psychology from Wilfrid Laurier University (Waterloo, Ontario) and a Masters of Science (M.SC.) in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Guelph (Guelph, Ontario). The second degree provided specialized training for working with the complex dynamics of relationship issues, as well as, individual issues.
My Career History & Training
My training started with a Bachelor of Arts degree (BA) in Psychology. I attended both the University of Winnipeg and the University of Western Ontario for this training. I then completed a Masters in Psychology from Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario. I worked in the field for a while, then attended the University of Guelph, where I completed a Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy. Throughout my training, I have been a busy mom raising three children.
My work history has allowed me to work in many diverse clinical settings in both Ontario and British Columbia which has provided me a wealth of experience and training. These settings have included community counselling agencies, university counselling agencies, inpatient and outpatient mental health facilities for adolescent and adults and specialized programs for eating disorders, as well as ongoing private practice.
One of my very fortunate experiences while living in Ontario was the opportunity to be a part of the early development of several Outpatient Eating Disorder Programs in Southern Ontario. I also led setting up a small Outpatient Eating Disorder Program at Cambridge Memorial Hospital, where I was the primary clinician for the program. In this role, I also worked closely with Grand River Hospital’s Eating Disorder Program in Kitchener, Ontario. During this time, I received training and consultation from specialists with the Eating Disorder Programs at Toronto General Hospital, the Hospital for Sick Children and other programs throughout Southern Ontario.
In 2005, I moved to Kelowna to take a position at Kelowna General Hospital in the Adolescent Psychiatric Unit (APU). I was employed as the Adolescent and Family Therapist and was a part of the development of the new program. While in Kelowna, I have also been employed at UBCO in their counselling department, where I counseled students and provided consultation to faculty and staff regarding student well-being. Throughout my career, I have also maintained a private practice and provided services for Employee Assistance and Rehabilitation-Disability Programs, ICBC and the Crime Victim Assistance Program. All of these experiences have allowed me to work with individuals, couples, families and groups, as well as, facilitating workshops and providing consultation to other professionals.
Over the years, I have continued to further my education and skills by participating in ongoing training. I have trained in several psychological modalities that I incorporate into my sessions, but I particularly like the effectiveness of Sensorimotor Psychotherapy. This is a type of therapy that combines somatic therapies, attachment theory, cognitions, emotions and neuroscience. This specialized program was developed by Dr. Pat Ogden and information can be found at the following link www.SensorimotorPsychotherapy.org. This is a very specialized and effective treatment for all types of trauma and attatchment and relational injuries. Currently in the Okanagan there are few clinicians with this training.
At this stage of my career, I am only providing services through my private therapy practice, so that I am able to offer my time to only private clients. I do provide both in office and online confidential video sessions.
